An easy & simple Christmas keepsake craft to do with your little ones this Christmas for you and your loved ones to cherish!
Salt Dough Recipe
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
1.5 cups water
Heat oven 200 degrees (F)
Instructions:
1. Mix all ingredients together to form dough– I used my kitchenaid mixer!
2. Take small sections of the dough and form smaller balls
3. Roll dough onto parchment paper using a rolling pin. You’ll want to roll it up/down + side/side to create a section big enough for a hand. Be careful not to roll the dough to thin! You don’t want it to break once baked!
4. Place your kids hand on top of the dough– make sure the thumb is away from the fingers for a good santa hat! Press down on all fingers, then gently lift their hand off the dough.
5. Take a sharp knife and cut around the finger border, leaving a bit of a border so that you can see the handprint once cooked.
6. Now take a straw and make a hole at the top of the ornament (opposite end of the fingers)
7. Place handprints on parchment paper on cookie sheet and bake at 200 degrees for 2 hours.
8. Let them cool for at least 2 hours before painting (I waited 24 hours)
Painting Instructions:
1. Have your kids sign their names with the date on the back!
2. I used acrylic based craft paint– it’s super easy to clean up! This is where you can use my photos as reference, but you and your kids can have fun mixing colors and getting creative with Santa’s faces!
3. Use some string, yarn or jute to tie through the hole.
4. Take some yarn or a cotton ball and hot glue it to the end of the thumb, to create a little pop of fun to Santa’s hat!
I love that we will be able to cherish these ornaments for years to come! p.s, these make the best Christmas gifts for loved ones!
